News & Updates

This year 2008, will be the first year of increased prices for each package. The rates page reflects the prices for the 2008-2009 hunting season.  Even as we increase prices, the uncertainty of grain prices(feed) causes us concern. We hope some stabilization has set in and there will only be one price increase this year. Prices are subject to change. Please check the rates page or call to confirm prices.

As our courses mature and change each year, we constantly strive to make your time spent on our grounds a happy and enjoyful experience for you and your dog.
Courses A and C have been burned this year which removes some under growth and opens the grounds. We have planted a large area of course B as well as cleared some of the perimeter.
Our next project will be to complete a grouse course for those of you that like hunting thick cover. We will be using quail instead of grouse. You will need a close working, well trained dog to have success on this course. Be sure to ask about the grouse course if interested.

Be sure to check this page during the hunting season for updates and other news.

For those of you interested, our contact on the home page will be available for dog training. Read his article below.

Tom Tankersley and the Training of Your Bird Dog

My name is Tom Tankersley and I have been training bird dogs most of my life. I started as a young boy learnng from my father. Over the years I have picked up many techniques from numberous sources. While working with the most common pointing breeds I have trained dogs for field trial competition, working in the field as a hunting partner, and helping correct problems. If you are trying to decide the best breed of dog to suit your particular living style(living in the  house with the family or in a kennel), how to start training your new pup, or have a dog that needs some work to have him where you want him, I believe I can be of assistance. The focus of my training is to help YOU train your own dog.

The most important part of the training process does not deal directly with your dog. It's YOU! You must have patience. It takes time and patience to develop a good hunting partner that you can be proud to show off. The time aspect can be as little as 15 minutes every other day working in your own yard. Second most important, in my opinion, is getting your dog in birds as soon as possible and as often as you have the opportunity. This is the reason SSJ Farm is so important. SSJ Farm has the perfect setting for taking your dog from an out of control pup to a finished dog. Hunting wild quail is almost a thing of the past in this part of the country. For the pointing breeds sake and for our pleasure we are very fortunate to have a place like SSJ Farm to keep this great sport alive.

The entire family can be a part of the training process. Whether it is working with your pup in the yard or taking them out in the field everyone can enjoy the process. I love all dogs, but, there is nothing better to me than having a dog that lives in your house as part of your family that you can take in the field and watch their instincts take over as they gracefully do what they love and generations of breeding has developed. They will  make you proud!

If you are not interested in training, or don't have a dog, I can take you on a guided hunt. I have three English Setter hunting companions, Nicky, Abby, and Sandy that would love to take you  on a hunt. Also, if you have never had the opportunity to hunt quail, I am available to teach you, your wife, or teenaged son or daughter the techniques of quail hunting. Safety being of utmost inportance!

If you are interested in training your dog, going on a hunt, or learning how to hunt quail you can contact me by phone at (904) 268-2368 or email at tankert2@comcast.net. I work with an hourly rate for training and set rate for guided hunts.
